I bought my Black and Decker Cordless rechargeable Lawn Mower (model CMM1000) about 5 years ago and have been pretty satisfied with it. I replaced an old gas mower and was looking forward to not having to deal with gas cans and that mess any more.
I recall doing a bit of research at the time and was about to buy the "Neuton" cordless mower from a local Vermont company, but I decided to go with the Black and Decker because of price and wider 19" mowing swath. I was a little nervous about the decision because I read reviews about short battery life and other issues with the Black and Decker. But I think I have the ideal situation for a rechargeable mower.
I don’t mind mowing a little higher than most people. I have a small yard, so I’m not running the thing all the way down in one mowing. I bring the mower in for the winter and store it in my basement so the battery does not freeze. In short, I take modest care of the mower and it has lasted better than I expected.
The battery seems to take a charge and hold a charge as well as it ever has. I do remember there was recall on this mower, but it was not something that was reasonable to fix, so I never did. I would have had to haul the thing 200 miles to the closest dealer.
In light of that recall, and the age of the mower, I am expecting to have to go to some trouble to find a new battery for it if the battery fails. Perhaps the battery for the newer models will work in this mower and it will be easier than I expect. Realistically, I will probably buy a new mower rather than try to replace the battery.
I have not done any research on newer cordless mowers, but I imagine they have made the switch (like most other cordless tools) to lithium batteries. My mower uses a good old fashioned lead acid battery that looks like a motor cycle battery.
In conclusion, I am generally happy with this mower. It has lasted longer than I expected and I will definitely look at the Black and Decker mowers again when this one finally bites the dust.
