Black And Decker CMM1000 Cordless Rechargeable Lawn Mower

I bought my Black and Decker Cordless rechargeable Lawn Mower (model CMM1000) about 5 years ago and have been pretty satisfied with it. I replaced an old gas mower and was looking forward to not having to deal with gas cans and that mess any more.

I recall doing a bit of research at the time and was about to buy the "Neuton" cordless mower from a local Vermont company, but I decided to go with the Black and Decker because of price and wider 19" mowing swath. I was a little nervous about the decision because I read reviews about short battery life and other issues with the Black and Decker. But I think I have the ideal situation for a rechargeable mower.

I don’t mind mowing a little higher than most people. I have a small yard, so I’m not running the thing all the way down in one mowing. I bring the mower in for the winter and store it in my basement so the battery does not freeze. In short, I take modest care of the mower and it has lasted better than I expected.

The battery seems to take a charge and hold a charge as well as it ever has. I do remember there was recall on this mower, but it was not something that was reasonable to fix, so I never did. I would have had to haul the thing 200 miles to the closest dealer.

In light of that recall, and the age of the mower, I am expecting to have to go to some trouble to find a new battery for it if the battery fails. Perhaps the battery for the newer models will work in this mower and it will be easier than I expect. Realistically, I will probably buy a new mower rather than try to replace the battery.

I have not done any research on newer cordless mowers, but I imagine they have made the switch (like most other cordless tools) to lithium batteries. My mower uses a good old fashioned lead acid battery that looks like a motor cycle battery.

In conclusion, I am generally happy with this mower. It has lasted longer than I expected and I will definitely look at the Black and Decker mowers again when this one finally bites the dust.

Black And Decker CMM1000 Mulching Mower
by: Reynaldo Henson

I bought my Black and Decker CMM1000 cordless lawn mower in the Spring of 1998 at Home Depot in Seattle, Washington. This lawn mower is a real workhorse. It still runs on the original rechargeable battery. That?s thirteen years of service, wow!

If my CMM1000 mower ever does bite the dust I would definitely buy another one just like it. It takes about four hours to charge the battery. One charge will usually allow me to mow the entire yard.

My yard is big for a city lot. I always use the mulching feature. Mulching provides nutrients for the lawn. I have the healthiest lawn on my street. I love the fact that my Black and Decker mower does not spew out gas fumes. It?s clean and good for the planet.

The Black and Decker CMM1000 includes a rear bag that?s great for picking up leaves in the Fall.

The one negative is that in April and May the grass grows thick and fast and the battery does not provide enough power to do the entire yard unless you adjust the height and mow a little higher. There are seven blade height positions that adjust all four wheels at the same time using just one lever.

The cordless mower is easy to use and quieter than a gas mower. It has a safety feature where it cannot start without inserting a large orange key. My Black and Decker CMM1000 has never failed to start. I just push the lever and it?s ready, even after thirteen years on the same maintenance free battery.

The owner?s manual recommends keeping the battery on constant charge but I never do that. I just plug it in for fours after mowing and it?s ready to use, even after sitting in the shed with the charger disconnected for a week. The charging light turns from red to green when the battery is fully charged.

It?s a good idea not to charge the battery overnight unless you are sure the temperature will be above 41 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don?t want to deal with smelly gas and like to mulch your medium sized lawn, this is the best mower for you.
