Craftsman 917.376400 Lawn Mower - 22" Self-propelled

by Wayne Garcia
(Columbia, Ms)

I live in Columbia, Ms., and purchased a Craftsman 22" model 917.376400 lawn mower approximately two years ago, at a local Sears store. It has a powerful motor, and both the cutting blade and self-propelled front wheels are powerful enough to cut through grass up to approximately six inches high at a height setting of four, and four inches high at height settings of two and three without encountering any problems.

It is usually difficult, however, to use the mower on a height setting of one, unless the grass is two inches high or shorter. On grass 3 inches high or taller, when on a height setting of one, the mower frame tends to drag on the grass, making it necessary to push the mower, rendering the self-propelled front wheels of little use.

Higher height settings are usually necessary for grass taller than five inches. The mower's powerful engine makes it suitable for large lawns, and is more powerful than necessary for a lawn smaller than 5000 sq. ft.

It has a detachable bagger, and a detachable side chute, making the mower adaptable to three forms of grass disposal: mulching, bagging, and spraying the cut grass onto the lawn beside the mower.

Mulching tends to cause some grass to clog up under the mower frame, and occasionally necessitates manual removal if the grass is five inches high or taller. Other features include automatic gas injection, making pulling the rope the only action necessary to start the mower, an ergonomic plastic rope handle, and a hatch that automatically locks open for easy removal of the bagger.

Overall, I am very pleased with this mower. During the two years in which I have owned and used it, it has worked very well for mowing my 30,000 sq. ft. lawn, and has not needed any repairs, other than a few blade replacements. Its performance has not degraded in any way, and other than a peeling sticker and a few scratches, it looks as new as when I bought it.

Craftsman 22" Self Propelled Electric Start Mower
by: Jason Livingston

I drove down to my local Sears, and brought home a Craftsman Model 917, 22" Multi-cut, power-propelled, electric start mower.

I knew that Sears had price protection so I could purchase a mower from them two weeks before Memorial Day, and if it happened to go on sale that holiday weekend I could get the difference credited back.

One of the biggest reasons I decided on the Craftsman 22" lawn mower is, I freely admit, a fringe-benefit that it had that others mowers for the most part don't: Electric Start. I'm a lefty, and starter handles are always on the right. Not that I can't pull-start a mower, it's just nice to know that if I'm tired, all I have to do is turn a key and it starts!

Another the great thing about having an electronic start Craftsman mower is that, if you forget to charge the battery, you can still pull-start it.

The Craftsman 917.376400 has a mulcher door and insert so you can choose if you want the mulch to shoot out the side, or stay where it was cut. I prefer the side-shooting as if helps keep my shoes clean.

I typically don't mulch, and I've found that the bag is very reasonably sized for what I need. If I don't wait weeks to mow my lawn, I can usually cut my approximately six-hundred square foot lawn with only one change of the bag.

If I let the lawn grow too long it takes about four bags to get the job done. Another great feature is the hose attachment. I don't have to dig around under the hood to clean the blades after mowing; I just plug the hose into the mower and let it spin for a couple minutes and the entire underside gets cleaned.

I really like the fact that the propulsion speed is adjustable based on how hard you grip the handles. Most self-propelled mowers are either off or on, so you either have to pull against it or go back over spots that get missed because the mower went too fast.

Having adjustable velocity helps a lot when doing corners or dense patches of grass that need those extra few spins of the blades. The back wheels are bigger than the front.

In fact, I think this actually makes it harder to make sharp turns. I'm not sure if it also contributes to difficulties I have backing the mower, but I feel this may be the case. I've found that I can go up a slight incline I have at the front of my lawn slightly easier than with the traditional wheels, but it isn't something that I would say is a big difference.

Aside from these few maneuverability issues, I don't have anything negative to say about this mower. I would recommend it for anyone who has a level, straight, lawn. I can run this mower for a long time very effortlessly, so I think it would be great for even the biggest of yards, so long as there isn't a significant amount of sharp turning required.

I don't think any other mower in this price range has as many features and perks as this mower has, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, ever.
