Proper Fall Lawn Care Starts With Feeding &
Fertilizing While Keeping Your Grass Watered And Leaf Free
Many think that fall lawn care is nothing more than raking leaves and
that spring is the time of year to prepare your lawn for the growing
season but this is quite the opposite.
Fall is the season to get your
lawn in shape for what you will find in the spring.
While raking is
important, there are other fall lawn care steps that you can take to
strengthen your
yard for what you will find in the spring.
If you live in a region
where snow and rain are frequent during the winter months, your lawn is
exposed to different periods of freezing and thawing.
Don't Cut Your Grass Too Short
It may make sense
to make one last pass over your grass with the mower and trim as short
as possible. This is a mistake. Leave 2 to 2 ½ inches of grass height
so that your grass is able to store valuable nutrients.
Anything
shorter will allow dehydration and disease to sneak in and a longer
height of 3 inches or more can lead to matting that can create snow
mold.
Give Your Grass A Good Drink
Many times the fall season is so cool that we associate this with
dampness but your yard still needs a drink of water if the soil begins
to harden. Be sure to include this as part of your fall lawn care
schedule and water your lawn and plants in the early morning
hours right up until frost sets in. This will allow your grass to
continue growth throughout the fall without drying up.
Do not overwater
as this can cause fungus to form and be trapped in the soil throughout
the winter.
Prepare For Winter With Organic Fertilizer
Give your lawn a final dose of fertilizer to winterize. A
winterizing solution of an organic blend, such as Neptune's Harvest
liquid organic fertilizer is ideal for all of the nutrients that you
need to help protect your lawn throughout the winter months.
In the
spring, you will be pleasantly surprised to find your lawn springing to
life far ahead of others. Be careful not to use a solution that is high
in potash or phosphorous as this can lead to pollution leaching into
the soil.
If you feel that your soil may be lacking in this area, get a
sample analyzed. Never use a synthetic blend of fertilizer in the fall
that can be trapped in the ground for months on end.
Sprinkle Over A Few Extra Seeds
Knowing when to plant grass seed on the
problem areas of your lawn is essential in order to give your grass the
best chance of early growth. Seeding problem
spots on your turf should be done in the fall when the tiny seeds have
a chance to find refuge just under the soil and have a chance to mature
just in time for spring. Make sure that your rake penetrates the soil
so the seeds can find a home and not lie dormant.
There will always be
those problem spots so save a little seed for the spring in case the
seedlings refuse to appear. Get a head start on your lawn this year by
producing and implementing a fall lawn care schedule. You will see the
difference next
spring and can make your spring lawn care process much simpler and more
rewarding.
