Earthwise 50118 Electric Mulching Mower

Earthwise 50118 Electric Mulching Mower

Last year we bought an Earthwise 50118 18-Inch Lawn Mower from Home Depot for our new place at a mobile home community in House Springs. The mower itself did a fine job - was easily adjustable and light with decent cornering which mattered being that there was remains of a garden created by the previous renter of that lot and my wife immediately started her own - creating a need to make many sharp turns within a relatively small space.

As Spring turned into Summer I found that maneuvering the mower AND the cord grew quickly from bothersome to aggravating to outrageous. By the end of the Summer the Earthwise mower found a permanent place in the shed and the kid across the street with a gas mower got his ten bucks a shot until Winter came. Next year - gas mower!

Earthwise 50118 Lawn Mower - Quiet, Corded And Electric
by: Michael Soares

I purchased the Earthwise 18-inch electric mower approximately five months ago from amazon.com. The mower cost approximately $160 and included free shipping. In the five months I have been using it, I have been happy with this mower.

It runs very quietly and it is extremely easy to start. It has a good range of height control settings, and it is easy to set the height with a lever. It also has the option to discharge your clippings out to the side.

The Earthwise electric mower has performed very well for the most part. I use it for my relatively small lawn, which is .14 acre. The wheels have proven durable. I have used it about twice each month and there is no wear and tear noticeable on any of the wheels. It is easy to push and maneuver. It works best on flat surfaces and dry grass.

My lawn has a lot of ruts and this mower seems to get hung up on them more than my previous Toro mower. The Earthwise 50118 mower has been able to cut through some of my taller grass easily enough. You may need to set it to a higher height setting to cut through very thick, tall grass and go slower.

I would recommend this mower to anyone looking for an electric, corded mower for a small lawn. Dealing with a cord while mowing is a bit of a labor of love so if you do not want to be bogged down with an electric cord, I would not recommend this or any corded mower.

One drawback is the "handle mounted safety blade control." While it seems necessary to have an easy, quick, foolproof option to turn the mower off immediately, this safety control requires you to hold a lever to the handle the entire time you want the mower to run.

Holding that against the handle does tire my hand out after a while. Also there are times when I need to let go so I can use both hands elsewhere?such as grabbing the electric cord off of something or picking up debris from the ground?and each time that happens, I have to restart the mower. (Again, the mower starts very easily but I worry about wearing out the starter mechanism.)

Also, the wheels on the Earthwise 50118 are set off from the body farther than my previous mower and it does not allow you to get very close to fences and sidewalks so it cannot be relied on to do the lawn job alone. I do need to use a weed eater after each mow.

Overall, this is a decent mower for the price and is good for smaller lawns. It is not a top of the line electric mower. The one feature I would like to change is the safety blade control, yet I have been pleased with its ability to get through tall grass, the variety of height control settings, and the quietness of the mower.
