I purchased my new Huskee 22" mower from Tractor Supply for under $250 with the extended warranty. I purchased this lawn mower because the price was low and it was self propelled. I have 1 1/4 of an acre to mow and with the Florida heat I knew I would need a little extra help making it around the yard. I visited Wal-mart, Sears and Tractor supply company. The only thing at Sears even close to this price range wasn't self-propelled. Wal-mart was out of stock on all the cheaper mowers so I couldn't really compare prices.
I didn't know much about Huskee other than they also made semi-decent hand tools so I just purchased the mower instead of taking a trip to the bigger city. When I mowed for the first time with my new mower it did very well. There was no uneven cutting and it ran great. However, the plastic cover where the grass cutting exit fell off and I never did find the bolt that holds it on.
By the end of the cutting season the mower wasn't cutting like it did new. The biggest issue was the lack of power; if I would wait a week past when I should have mowed, it would not have enough power to cut the taller grass causing it to stall out.
However, after replacing the blades it would gain much of the cutting power back. The biggest feature that surprised me was how easy it starts using the pull string. I have never had to pull more than twice to start it up except for the first start after winter. Even after sitting all winter untouched, the mower only took a few extra pulls to start right up.
For a better example, my grandmothers riding mower broke down so I took mine over while it was getting fixed. She was able to pull start it and she's 81.
Huskee definitely figured out how to fix one of the biggest annoyances pull strings are notorious for. The front wheel drive feature has been a big help when the weather is 100+ and you have a long mow ahead of you. There is no speed setting so I recommend you test it before you buy it. I found that it's current speed is nice and brisk. You don't have to run behind it but your not pushing it to mow faster either.
In conclusion, if you don't have a lot of money to throw on a mower I would recommend this one. You'll have to keep the blades sharpened and keep an eye on the plastic debris shield but you won't have a problem getting it started and the front wheel drive will save you some energy for summer fun.
