Scotts 20" Classic Reel Mower

I use a 20-inch Scotts brand Reel Lawn Mower, and it is an excellent piece of yard equipment. I have had it for 3 years, and it has never given me any problems. Because it is a reel mower, there is no gasoline to purchase, which is a great thing in today's economy.

It is also very quiet--only the sound of the reel turning and the grass being sliced can be heard. This is a great feature for people who like to mow early in the morning, or late in the evening and do not want to disturb their family or neighbors.

It is so quiet that I can pass our cats or chickens while mowing and they aren't even scared! Another great thing about this mower is that it gives me a little exercise while I am doing yard work. It does take some effort to push it, and it takes a little longer to mow than a gas mower would, but I find these to be added benefits because I am outdoors for longer periods of time, and I don't need an expensive gym membership to get my exercise in!

Our yard is 1/3 of an acre, and I use the Scott's reel mower on all of the grass. It is perfect for small yards, and anyone who'd like a little bit of exercise will love it even on a medium to medium-large lawn.

You can attach a bag to the back of it for catching clippings, but I prefer to allow them to fall onto the lawn and biodegrade thereby adding nutrients to the lawn. This lawnmower does not blow gas fumes into your face, does not pollute the environment, and is very easy to care for. You do not have to know how to fix a motor to keep it going. All you have to do is rinse it off each time you are done, add a little wd40 to the wheels in spring, and use the adjusting lever to determine how high or low your grass will be after it is mowed.

This is an excellent lawn mower, and I would highly recommend it to most people.

Gasoline Is Too Expensive So I Choose A Scotts Reel Mower
by: Mark Wittrock

I have a very small yard in Holbrook, NY – a town in Suffolk County (Long Island). Due to the size of my lawn, there was no need for a gas powered lawn mower.

With the price of gasoline over $3.50 per gallon and there is no way to pinpoint where it will go in the future, I also felt that I would be wasting even more money with a prototypical mower. I decided to go with the Scott’s Reel Mower, which I found at Home Depot for under $150.00 in June, 2011.

The grass catcher is serviceable and the Scotts mower can easily navigate my lawn. It is noteworthy though besides for 1 tree, my lawn is free of obstacles and very flat. I love that the mower makes very little noise and being environmentally conscience, the fact that it does not pollute the air and requires no energy use, except for my own power made it even more appealing.

I have very little negatives to speak of in regards to this Scotts Classic 2000-20 mower. The rear wheels seem to be a bit flimsy. I have not had any issues with them, but it’s just a sense that I have. This is somewhat nit picky, but the grass catcher, although adequate can allow grass to blow out if mowing on a windy day.

With that said, I learned that if winds are too high, I simply put the mowing off and I only use the grass catcher when I expecting company over, if not I allow the grass clipping to feed the lawn. The height setting are fine and I usually leave mine in the middle and mow once every 7-10 days (depending on weather).

If you have a smaller lawn and are looking for an alternative to a gas powered mower, the Scotts Classic 2000-20 may work well for you, as it did for me.

It's pretty basic, easily stored and gets the job done. Every month, quickly sharpen the blades just as preventative maintenance (that's just something I do to keep everything working well). I think many will enjoy not having the loud engine noise the most – I know that was my favorite part of the Scotts Classic 2000-20!

The Scotts 20" Reel Mower Requires Quite A Lot Of Effort And Committment
by: Joseph G. Barnhardt

I am from Corvallis, Oregon and I own a Scotts 20 inch reel lawn mower. I purchased it from Home Depot a few months ago and it has definitely been worth it. It came in a box which had all the tools and parts necessary to assemble it, along with very clear instructions.

It was relatively easy to put together with the exception of the two three-quarter circle washers meant to keep the handle connected- it took me about 5 minutes to put each one on. These tend to spring off multiple times when you try to put them on, but they do their job of keeping the handle connected to the mower quite well.

It is wonderful being able to mow the lawn without having to worry about gas or having to wear hearing protection. I can actually talk with my wife without shouting while mowing the lawn!

I get a great amount of satisfaction from pushing the mower and hearing the slicing noise made by the reel blades while seeing the cut grass go flying. It is adjustable to different heights, and the lowest setting is really about as low as I would ever cut grass.

It doesn't take nearly as long to mow the grass with a push mower as you think it would, but I am still glad that I went with the 20 inch model because I have a pretty big yard, and every little bit helps. I get great exercise using it, and it is definitely a conversation piece when neighbors see me using it.

Of course, like anything else, there are a few downsides. The first major downside is the same as one of the positives: effort, or as I called it earlier, exercise. It takes a lot of effort to push this mower around, and that effort has to include a little technique.

If you push straight down on the handle, this pulls the mower reel and the drive wheels up off the ground, resulting in you running around looking silly while not actually cutting any grass.

The next bad point is a direct result of this- since you need a decent amount of downward force applied without pushing the drive wheels off the ground, you need to be at least six feet tall to use the highest lawn height setting effectively.

Lower lawn height settings work just fine though, and are closer to the height most people keep their lawn. Another problem lies with keeping it sharp- if you mow the grass while it is even a little bit wet grass will stick all over the reel, and need to be cleaned off to prevent rusting and dulling of the blades.

A motorized lawn mower can work alright with a somewhat dull blade, but for this mower sharpness is critical.

The final issue with this lawn mower- it cannot handle super long grass or weeds. These will just bend over and pop right back up after the mower has gone by. Using this mower means committing to keeping the grass at a manageable height. Despite having a few issues, this has been an amazing lawn mower so far and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone else who has a small to medium size lawn, and willingness to put in a bit of effort.

Best Environmentally Friendly Mower
by: Charles McFarland

I recently bought a motorless push lawn mower, to be specific, a Scotts 2000-20 - 20" Classic Hand Mower. I am a big believer that we need to keep our world safe, because we only have one, and we need to protect it for future generations, and by buying a push reel lawn mower, I can do my part to lessen my carbon footprint.

I have to push the compact little lawn mower and then a small circular spinning wheel with blades is propelled by your movement, and cuts the grass, which is really ingenious in its simplicity.

I admit that I miss my gasoline powered lawn mower. It takes me more time to cut the grass. I live in a hilly place, so the man powered lawn mower is a challenge, to say the least.

This lawn mower is also a pain during autumn, when the leaves fall, because it has a hard time going through the leaves, and I have to push even harder to chop through all the leaves.

In the long run, this is a money saver. The man powered lawn mowers are not very expensive, but it takes some searching to find them. I got mine on Amazon.com.

You will not ever have to buy gasoline for the man powered lawn mower, which will save you money over time. There is no doubt that it will take more time than an electric start lawn mower, but you will get a great workout. I have noticed some definition in my upper arms since I switched lawn mowers, and overall, I am so glad a bought a new motorless Scotts push lawn mower.
