Spring Lawn Care And Maintenance Is An Essential Exercise For Creating A Healthy Green Turf Throughout The Summer

Spring lawn care and maintenance is important in helping to restore the thriving growth of grass. But you can also do too much in an effort to speed along a nice looking lawn.

Keep your preparation basic and let Mother Nature do the rest.

The winter months take a toll on grass that was once thick and luscious. The number one activity that can be done in aiding a lawn after the winter months is overseeding.

Rake Away The Thatch

While fall raking is still important, spring raking is needed to remove the layer of thatch that has built up over the winter months. Thatch is a build up of grass stems, roots, debris and clippings that have formed a layer on the ground and decomposes over time.

These spots are evident as thick tall grass sprouts above your well-kept lawn, resembling a bad haircut. Raking is a good way to rid your lawn of these spots before this buildup has a chance to find growth in patches where aeration is not able to take place.

A thatching rake works best for digging deep into the soil and bringing up the brown patches of thatch that can then be pulled up and discarded. A regular rake with flimsy blades will only sweep the top of your grass blades, removing only surface debris.

In the Spring lawn care video series below, Mike Kraft, Lowe's home improvement and gardening expert shows you how to maintain your lawn during the Spring season.

Part 1: Lawn Preparation Tips

Strengthen Grass With A Fertilizer Feed

Fertilizing is a method to treat areas where grass is slow growing, discolored or are full of weeds. Leaving grass clippings on your lawn delivers about 20% of the nitrogen needed to keep your lawn healthy but it could be lacking in phosphorus and potassium.

It is best to fertilize when your yard is actively growing and less is better. Do not fertilize in shady areas where shoot growth can run rapid with too much nitrogen. Potassium is more important in shady areas.

Part 2: Lawn Fertilizer Tips

Spike With A Lawn Aerator & Sprinkle Seed

Walking across lawns during all seasons can cause compaction or a growth of moss plants. Lawn aeration is an easy way to rid your yard of these areas with a spring lawn care schedule.

You do not need special tools or equipment to aerate your lawn. Putting on a pair of spikes shoes and working small holes in the ground is enough to help the crusted soil to breath.

A good work up with a thatching rake will also help aerate the soil in these sections. Bare spots may require over seeding to bring back new sprouts that have been totally eliminated from the ground.

Aerate the soil well before beginning and always follow the directions for over seeding to prevent widespread growth of extra grass in existing grassy areas.

Part 3: Lawn Seeding Tips

Part 4: Lawn Watering Tips

Many important lawn care steps are recommended to be done in the fall when the ground has had a chance to fully repair itself after the winter season before. But thatch raking, lawn aeration, over seeding and fertilizing can be done just as effectively with a spring lawn care program where results will be seen in as little as 5-6 weeks.

And Finally, Part 5: Lawn Mowing Tips
