We Have A Troy Bilt Pony Riding Mower

by John James
(Portland, Oregon)

We purchased our Troy Bilt, Pony model, riding lawn mower last summer. We purchased it from Lowes. It was reasonably priced compared to the John Deere and Husqvarna Models. It is working better than our previous riding mower, a John Deere. We only have a 1 acre lot to mow. Most of our property is on an incline. It handles the hills well.

I am not concerned about my 12 year old son being knocked off while mowing the lawn. It does not make tight turns well especially on the inclines. We have to get the smaller areas with our push mower. I do not like where the fuel tank is located as it is hard to get to, to add fuel.

We have added our own home made plowing system for easy snow removal. It is a strong running piece of machinery. We like our Troy Bilt and recommend it to our friends and family. We also transport our mower in truck to mow the local baseball fields. It is easy to transport and does a good job mowing the fields.

Nice Even 42" Cut
by: Donald Batchelder

I purchased this Troy Bilt Pony riding mower summer of 2005 from Lowes at the discounted price of $800 since the first owner returned it shortly after purchasing due to dissatisfaction with the blade cut width.

We use it on our two-acre yard, which is a combination of level land and moderately steep inclines along with numerous large oak trees and pines. The mower gets a fairly difficult workout each time we mow, which is several times a season as we live in Middle Tennessee.

I love this mower. We have never experienced any difficulty even with minimal maintenance after sitting outside all winter every year in the rain and snow. Other than changing blades there have been no other problems. With the 8-speed transmission you can vary the speed to accommodate any type of normal terrain.

The 17.5 Hp engine has the power to handle moderate inclines while cutting through overgrown vegetation up 12-14 inches high without stalls. This Troy Bilt Pony has been used continuously for six seasons and after all this use the belt is somewhat lax and the springs are a bit creaky, which can be expected, but it still starts easily and mows cleanly even as I stated without any maintenance.

The engine does not burn or leak oil. While probably better suited for a smaller, more level lawn, this model surprisingly has withstood the more difficult terrain we have used it on. Even while being economical, it has proved extremely durable and I definitely would recommend this model to anyone who is looking for a good all-purpose mower and does not want to spend a loads of money.

I am sure there are mowers out there with smaller turn ratios and more powerful engines, but I love my Troy Bilt and am very satisfied with the performance and durability.
